Hi Community!

As a sole trader I incurred expenses for meals whilst travelling away from home.

I did not keep receipts.

My credit card statements contain evidence of these purchases, which were at restaurants which don't sell anything other than food and drinks.

I have access to the menus from each of these restaurants and would be able to corroborate the total expense listed on my bank statements with the items I purchased from the menu.

Would this be sufficient evidence for the ATO to claim these meals as deductions, in the absence of an itemised receipt?

Many thanks

C

Hi @chazp,

Meals aren't usually deductible because they're a personal expense.

When you do claim deductions for your business, generally you'd need receipts to substantiate your claims. You can view the information on our webpage under income and deductions for business. This will assist you with what you can and can't claim, and what you need to report to us.
