It has been over a month since I lodged my tax return (35 days). I tried to call to speak to someone to find out why it is delayed, but the ATO number now just provides automated messages and hangs up.

This is the 4th year of delayed returns in a row. From 2020-2023 that totalled 139 days of waiting. Each year, after waiting 40+ days (last year it was 51 days), I needed to call to have my return processed. Each year I receive an apology that they are not sure why there is a delay, and then I magically receive a notice that my return has been processed the following day. So despite your automated message saying I do not need to call, it is very clear that I need to each year.

I have a simple claim and my details do not change from year to year. So please tell me how I can talk to a real person, yet again, as it seems that the system is still broken for the 4th year running. The only reason it is only 4 years is that for the 2 years prior, I owed money and somehow my return was processed in 7 days each time - amazing! (also it is 'hilarious' that the keyword 'delay' cannot be added)

Hi @Jimwah,

Whist we aim to process electronically lodged tax returns within 12 business days, there are times when delays occur.

Some of the reasons are:

  • You’re under an insolvency administration.
  • Manual checks need to be done.
  • Need to check for outstanding debts with other government agencies such as Child Support or Centrelink.
  • You have an unresolved debt with us.

If you’re experiencing financial difficulty, you may be eligible for priority processing.
