I am currently in Australia on wife's sponsored 482 visa which is valid for 2 years.

My work is remote for UK company that does not operate or have any interests in Australia and my work here is UK works only.

I am paid into UK tax account and taxed as normal in UK.

Do I have any need to complete Aus tax return?

As part of the conditions of Visa we pay Health Insurance and are registered with Medicare.

Just want some advice as don't want to pay tax twice on income or have large bill at end of tax.

Your tax obligations in Australia depend on your tax residency status. Since you are living in Australia for more than 183 days on a temporary visa, you may be considered an Australian tax resident. Australian tax residents are generally required to declare worldwide income and may need to lodge a tax return. However, if you are classified as a temporary resident, you are only taxed on income derived from Australian sources.

Key Factors to Consider:

  1. Tax Residency – Temporary visa holders are often considered temporary residents, meaning they are exempt from Australian tax on foreign-sourced income (such as your UK salary). However, this does not apply if you have a spouse who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, which may affect your status.
  2. Foreign Income Exemption – If you qualify as a temporary resident, your UK income is not taxed in Australia, and you generally don’t need to lodge a tax return unless you earn Australian income (e.g., from investments, rental property, or employment in Australia).
  3. Double Taxation – Since you are already paying tax in the UK and your work is exclusively for a UK company, Australia’s double taxation agreement (DTA) with the UK may prevent you from being taxed twice.
  4. Medicare Levy – As you hold private health insurance and are registered with Medicare, you may be liable for the Medicare Levy if you are required to lodge a tax return.

What You Should Do:

  • Check your tax residency status with the ATO’s online residency tool or consult a tax professional.
  • If you qualify as a temporary resident, you likely do not need to declare your UK income or lodge an Australian tax return.
  • If required to lodge, you may be able to claim a foreign income tax offset to avoid double taxation.

Since tax residency can be complex, you may want to confirm with the ATO or a tax advisor to ensure compliance and avoid unexpected liabilities.
