I have a partnership ABN with my partner, which will be cancelled soon (last tax return). Now, I want to create my own Sole trader ABN but in a different business activity from that of the partnership.

Can I create the sole trader ABN while still having the partnership active?

When I apply for the ABN, do I have to specify the current partnership ABN? (There is a section asking for any previous ABN - although, as mentioned, the partnership is of a different business type than the sole trader)

Thank you for the help.

Hi @eslyverano,

There has been a previous thread with a similar question and has some great info and links that may help.

You can apply for a sole trader ABN while the partnership's ABN is active. As the partnership's ABN should be in the partnership's name, it relates to only to the partnership. Therefore, you may not need to list it when applying as a sole trader, only ABNs you've previously held personally.

We'd recommend reading up on changing your business structure and the tax obligations before making the change.
