Hi Community,

Need some help here as I am getting a bit confused.

Here is the overview of key details:

  • My spouse is an Australian Citizen and has Medicare for over 3 years now.
  • We got married on 15th November 2025.
  • I am currently on a temporary visa expiring 15th March 2026.
  • We have applied for a partner visa (820/801), and I have received a Bridging Visa A (both Bridging Visa Grant and Partner Visa application were done on 4th March 2026).
  • Note the bridging visa does not become Active until 15th March 2026.

I have not enrolled for Medicare currently.

Here is my question: Do I have to pay the Medicare Levy (2%)? If so, from what date would I be liable to pay the Medicare levy on? Would it be from the date of marriage (15th November 2025), or date of Partner Visa Lodgement (4th March 2026), or would it be from the date the Bridging Visa becomes active (15th March 2026), or would it be from the date I actually enroll into Medicare?

Thanks, heaps for your help! Just want to better understand my EOFY Tax Liabilities :)

" Do I have to pay the Medicare Levy (2%)?"

Depends on your income and your family income.

Medicare levy reduction for low-income earners | Australian Taxation Office

If your family income is above the threshold you will be subject to the levy from the date you acquired a spouse. See "Claiming an exemption" and meaning of dependant in link below.

Not entitled to Medicare benefits | Australian Taxation Office

This may be a different date to your marriage date, as you may have been a couple before this date.

See below for meaning of spouse

Spouse details – married or de facto 2025 | Australian Taxation Office

If you were entitled to Medicare benefits at any time before this date then you won't receive an exemption for that period either. Whether you had enrolled or not is not relevant.
