ABN Cancellation backdate

If an ABN is currently showing as active but the business infact ceased 5 years ago can the cancellation be backdated? it is an active ABN on a non-existant business which is incurring BAS fees and interest.

Yes you can backdate the cancellation date to when the business ceased. Don't forget to check that any other associated registrations are also cancelled so that you stop recieving BAS and fees etc. If registered for GST, your GST registration will be cancelled automatically when your ABN is cancelled. Depending on the type of business (e.g. sole trader, company, trust, partnership) you may need to also lodge a final income tax return
