Hi there @DJ3,

Yes, you can claim expenses when you use your camper trailer as part of your work travel. The extent that you can claim your yearly expenses will depend on the extent that it was bought or used for work.

Your Camper trailer accommodation expenses incurred when you travel to field days / seminars when in remote areas will be deductible where:

  • Your work activities requires you to undertake the travel;
  • You declare any allowance you have received for the expense in your income tax return;
  • Your work activity requires you to sleep away from home overnight;
  • You have a permanent home elsewhere; and
  • You do not incur those expenses in the course of relocating or living away from home.

You can claim the following costs for your Camper trailer accommodation:

  • Any interest on loans used to purchase the Camper trailer or  lease payments
  • Depreciation on decline in value of the Camper trailer
  • Insurance costs
  • General maintenance of the Camper trailer

These expenses will need to be apportioned for deduction purposes. For example, if you have a camper trailer that you use for private camping and holidays and then use it  while you are away for one month travelling on work, then you can claim 1/12 of the expenses as deductible. It might be different if you specifically bought the camper trailer to use for your work.

Hope this helps! Thanks, Nate
