1. Do you register ABN on personal name or on Business Name in case of Sole Trader?

2. Can I run 2 businesses with same ABN as a sole trader?

3. Can I register two different business names with same ABN (as a sole trader)?

3. or Do I need to apply 2 ABNs for two separate businesses (but remaining a sole trader)?

Hi @js24aus,

Hopefully we can answer all of your questions in one go!

1. When setting up your business as a sole trader, you can either register using your personal name or a business name. If your business name is your own name, you do not need to register the business name. However, if using a business name, you will have to register this with the Australian Securities & Investments Commission. Some examples of business names should provide further assistance.

2. As a sole trader, you can conduct any number of businesses/activities under the same ABN - provided they all operate under the same business structure. If the second business operates using a different structure (e.g. partnership), you need to apply for a separate ABN.

3. & 4. As above, you can register two different business names with the same ABN - so long as they both fall under the sole trader structure.

Thanks, @NelsonS
