As the Assistant Commissioner for Individuals Engagement and Support, I’m really pleased to see so many people participating in our first live community event  - it’s a great opportunity to get on top of your tax time questions.

Over 6.8 million people have already lodged their returns and we’re expecting millions more by the end of October.

We use sophisticated data-matching technology to pre-fill most information , including things like wages, bank interest and dividends. With the majority of pre-fill information now available, most of the hard work is already done for you.

In most cases you’ll only need to double-check the details, add deductions and some other details, and click submit. But if you’ve been putting off lodging because you’re not sure about something, now is a great time to ask!

My top 4 tips for getting your tax right are:

  1. Beat the deadline. Lodge with myTax or contact a registered agent by 31 October
  2. Get your paper work in order. Using our ATO app to record your income and expenses throughout the year is a great way to make tax time easier
  3. Include all of your income. Don’t forget about your second job or money earned from the sharing economy
  4. Know what you can claim. Remember the three golden rules for claiming a deduction for a work-related expense:
    • You must have spent the money and not have been reimbursed
    • It must be directly related to earning your income
    • You must have a record to prove it

Thanks everyone!

Kath Anderson,

Assistant Commissioner
