HI just wondering if we only employ shearers once per year - or at most a single shearer for 2 times per year this is not an ongoing employemnt arrangement so will STP be voluntary?

Will we still have to report quarterly through our agent?

Hi @rjbal1976,

Thanks for getting in touch!

We have recently introduced a seasonal quarterly concession.

Subject to eligibility, seasonal employers will be able to apply for the seasonal quarterly concession. They will be able to lodge quarterly through a registered agent or by themselves through an STP enabled solution. This concession is only available for seasonal employers.

More information on quarterly reporting including a fact sheet will be available on our website shortly.

Thanks, JodieH.

As a seasonal employer I have been looking at how I can be compliant with the STP system.

As mentioned we employ for only a few weeks a year. The quarterly reporting is a sensible solution but the STP enabled solutions you refer to are not helpful and using a tax agent again costs $$$$. Pay rates in these STP electronic payroll systems are all hourly daily or annually? Shearers are paid per sheep and the tally varies daily. It could be done weekly or maybe fortnightly but there is no provision (not even for quarterly so the timeframes could match??).

All the same superannuation and wage input is required for the Superannuation Clearing House on a quarterly basis when lodged. This is accessed through the ATO website. Why is this duplication required for the STP. Please no more red tape! For seasonal employers it should be quarterly reporting and the SBSCH should automatically link into the STP system with the required information.

Thanks

Hi @Mico

Thanks for getting in touch!

If your chosen STP solution does not quite meet your needs, you may wish to ask your digital service provider for assistance. They may be able to come up with a way to have the software calculate piece-based pay and withholding amounts for you to be able to report with.

You can use the information in the following tax table to help you cross-check the software calculation and make sure it is correct. Please note that if you wish to report STP quarterly you will have to make an application, if you are eligible to do so.

With respect to your feedback, at this point in time there is no ability for STP reporting to be integrated with the SBSCH, though this may change in the future.

Hope this helps.
