Hi,

As a manager, can I claim coffee/morning tea/afternoon tea purchases for staff?  We often conduct meetings in the local cafe outside the office for a quick private meeting etc and I often pay with the thought its a tax deduction - now I'm not so sure. Also, can I claim for my part of the expense.?

Thanks in advance Smiley Happy

Hi @scerribear,

Thanks for your question! @Coffee_unspilt's link has some really useful information on generally deductible expenses. Even if you discuss business matters during a meeting, you usually can't claim these costs back.

If you don't think that your situation is covered by the information on our website, you can contact our early engagement team to ask for specialist advice. You can ask for a call back or email by completing the online form on our website.

Thanks!

Hi scerribear

As a general rule deductions need to be expenses that are directly related to generating income.

So in order to claim the coffee/ food expense you would need to be able to prove that it is.

Alike how a keeping a membership in your profession maintains and can improve your earning ability.

I would dearly appreciate a research article to prove that coffee adds to my performance, but here's hoping ....sorry for the digression.

I feel your situation fits into Entertainment expenses.

Please note this is my personal view; I’m an ATO employee who chooses to help out here in my own time.

Hi, Following on from the query about coffee out over meetings..  I often purchase a packet of biscuits or crackers and dips etc to assist with long team meetings in. We dont have a budget for this where I work and as meeting chair and facilitator I take this on as a strategy for building team morale. Can I claim this expense?

Hi @frognworm,

Welcome to our Community!

When completing your tax return, you're entitled to claim deductions for some expenses, most of which are directly related to earning your income. To claim a work-related deduction:

  • you must have spent the money yourself and weren't reimbursed
  • it must be directly related to earning your income
  • you must have a record to prove it.

If you've made a personal decision to purchase these items, it wouldn't usually meet the requirements to claim as a deduction, however if your understanding is different to ours, you can contact our early engagement team to ask for specialist advice. You can request a call back or email by completing the online form on our website. Or if you have general questions, you can phone us on 13 28 61 between 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday to speak with an operator.

Thanks.
