If a friend lives with me and offers to pay board of $210 per week, is this taxable? There would be an informal agreement only. She will probably look at claiming some rental assistance as she is a student and only works part time. But I will not claim any rental tax related deductions. Would this fall under a domestic agreement?

Hello @Shannon3,

It depends if what you receive is considered rent or board.

If your friend is paying you board, this is a replacement of the expense it costs you for her to live in your house. The board is to cover things like internet, electricity, water and food. This would be considered a domestic arrangement.

If what you receive is in excess of the expenses it costs you for your friend to live in your house, then this is considered rent and is a taxable income.

For more information please see the Domestic arrangements on our Rental property as investment or business page.
