Has anyone else had issues with obtaining their tax refund from the ATO? I lodged through a registered tax agent for 2015 and 2016 (so two years) and it's been 5 weeks now exactly.. My return was SO simple and no deductions were noted. The ATO have said my return is being "reviewed further". Am I being audited? I'm confused! There's nothing there for them to audit really!?

Hi @SD27,

Thanks for coming to the Community with your query!

We aim to process electronic return within 2 weeks however, there may come times when this takes longer and manual processing needs to occur - lodging multiple returns at once means it could take us longer to process. You can find more information about progress of returns here.

As the progress of your tax return has taken longer than 30 days you have the option of lodging a formal complaint with us. You can contact us between 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday or access the Complaints form online. A complaints resolver will be in contact with you within 3 working days. The resolver may need to obtain further information from you to help resolve your case. You will be kept informed of the progress throughout the process and we will notify you of the final outcome.

Keep an eye on your myGov account for any updated account details and your inbox for any correspondence.

Thanks.

Hi SD27

Longer than standard processing times occur when :

  • ATO need to cross-check data with other government agencies (including Centrelink and Child Support)
  • you have a debt obligation with ATO
  • You are insolvent
  • your tax file number (TFN) has been compromised
  • ATO has queries about information provided in your tax return.

When this happens ATO usually need to review the details. Contact ATO to get an update.

Thanks for your reply. I have not received any money from Centrelink or any other government agencies whilst I was living in Australia, I didn't even have Medicare. The only thing they could possibly be checking is that the income I got was correct.. and they have my statements so I'm just not sure what's going on.

If you or your tax ganet contact ATO they can advise you why your return has been delayed.

I have been trying and unfortunately every time I've rung they have not been able to get through to my case manager and I've requested a call back several times and it hasn't happened. I was just wondering what things they could possibly be checking when there simply isn't much to check. Thank you!
