Dear Sir or Madame

I have been working overseas in Japan since July 22nd 2017 and I am currently working on a contract that will allow me to stay for up to 5 years, after which I may look at staying longer. Am I currently an Australian resident for tax purposes, and if so will I remain a taxable resident while I live in Japan?

From what I have read I understand this is decided on a case-by-case basis, so is there any way for me to have official proof of my residency status?

Many Thanks

Yes, you can apply for an ATO private ruling

Its very easy to do and you will get a response in writing.  Please note that the provision of a private ruling is dependant on the circumstances and sometimes the ATO can not provide a ruling for example in hypothetical circumstances.

If you need assistance completeing the request call the ATO on 13 26 81
