Hi,

I am a student (Under 18) who started working at Coles last year in July. At the time I didn't have a TFN, and didn't get mine until October so I was being taxed at 45% or so, and now I have around $700 to be claimed. I am pretty sure I can't claim it yet and have to wait until the end of the finanncial year (please correct me if I'm wrong). I am new to all this tax stuff and would apreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction, thanks!

Hi @BigFoot

Welcome to the ATO online community

@macfanboy is right, you will need to lodge a tax return

Tax returns cover the financial year from 1 July to 30 June. When you have tax withheld from your income you need to lodge a tax return, You can lodge after the 30th June 2018.

https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/lodging-your-tax-return/ , To lodge online you need a myGov account linked to the ATO, When you link to the ATO you may need to call us and request a linking code - phone 13 28 61 (have your TFN with you and also a document such as a birth certificate or passport)

You stated as well that you are under 18, there is a label that you need to complete in your tax return so that you don't get taxed at a higher rate - https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/investing/in-detail/children-and-under-18s/your-income-if-you-are...

When it comes to completing your tax return you can always call us or you are able to chat with online for support.

Regards, Tracey

That is correct, you need to wait until the end of the financial year.

Then you lodge a tax return including all of your income from working, any from centrelink and any investment income.

You would then include any allowable deductions that you may have incurred from working.

It will then present you with a refund or a tax payable depending on the information entered.
