Hi,

Regarding work-related deductions, does this extend to overseas trips?

Specifically, there was a work-specific conference held in New Zealand for two weeks. Am I allowed to deduct meals, travel and accommodation related to this trip?

Sometimes. You might be able to claim some costs as a deduction. See information on seminars on ato.gov.au.

You would need need to be able to justify a strong connection between the conference and your current income producing activities. You would also need to be very careful to not claim any personal portion of the trip. For example if the conference was one day and you stayed a total of 5 days, not doing anything work related on the other days your travel deductions could only be 20% of the costs or related just to the day of the conference.
