I've been offered a second job. My main income is around $690 gross , my second job will only be 4 hours a week at $24.36 an hour , potentially 8 hours a week at random . I've been told that I'll have to pay 50٪ tax on my second job , is that correct?

Its not 50% but the tax would be higher on the basis you are not claiming the tax free threshold from this second job (the question in the TFN declaration).

This is just the withholding tax. The correct amount of tax is calculated when you do your tax return.
