Hi,

I can not find a definitive answer as to whether a SMSF Auditor can ask for the a funds annual return as part of their audit process.  For me, it makes sense that you check these details are the same as the accounts as your name is on the annual return.  However, I can't see anywhere online that says you can request this?   As the actual audit is on the financial statements, which should in theory match the return.

Anyone have anything on this?

Kind regards,

SF

An auditor can ask for annual returns or anything else that they consider is required for the purposes of the Audit.

This is covered by the Australian Government Department - Auditing and Assurance Standards Board in a guidance statement called " Auditing Self Managed Superannuation Funds ".

Annual returns gets a specific mention in Guideance Statement GS 009 paragraph 76 .. GS_009_31-10-08.pdf

The ATO does not have anything to do with the Auditing Standards and will only be able to provide you with very general information, so for SMSF external Audit specific information you will need to contact the Audit and Assurance Standards Board :

- Phone: (03) 8080 7400

- E-mail: enquiries@auasb.gov.au

Hi @SF,

Welcome to our Community!

Generally speaking, when appointed as a SMSF auditor, trustees are required to provide you with all the relevant documentation to conduct and finalise the audit. If you request more information from the trustees, they must provide it to you within 14 days of your written request.

SMSF auditors are offered a number of tools and resources to help in the audit process. Our Professional-to-professional support can help with circumstances not covered in existing material. You can complete the Request for approved SMSF auditor's professional-to-professional technical guidance form on our website.

Alternatively, you can phone us on 13 10 20 between 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday to speak with an operator.

Thanks, JodieH.
