tax file number application

My son fell into the trap of applying for his tax file number via taxfilenumberaustralia.org    He paid $69 for a FREE tax file number

When he told me that he had paid for the TFN application, I quickly sent an email asking them to stop the application and to refund the money.  I am still waiting for a reply.

The home page says  "Disclaimer: www.taxfilenumberaustralia.org facility is provided by the Australian Taxation Office through its comprehensive site."  indicating that this is part of the Australian Taxation Office.  I would think that the ATO does not own, provide or endorse this website nor it's exorbitant service.

This site is a rip-off and the ATO should make them put a sign on their home page stating that they are not endorsed nor are they part of the ATO.

Thanks Kylie, I had read all those posts before Isent the email to yourselves.

But my primary query is why the ATO allows them to state on their home page that they are part of the ATO?

Surely they shouldn't be allowed to do this?

Hi @tfp,

Appreciate your thoughts, however tax professionals are able to provide this service.

If you feel that there is an issue the Tax Practitioners Board are responsible for the regulation of tax agents and you are able to lodge a complaint.
