Over the course of the financial year my wife and I have made numerous donations to deductible gift recipients. When we complete our tax returns, are we free to choose whose tax return we claim the donation deductions on, or do we need to split the deductions 50/50 between our two tax returns?

You claim the deductions based on the name on the receipt.

If there are no names on the receipt you can claim them in whatever manner you wish.

Does that mean that if the organisation has issued the receipt with both our names on it, we need to split the deduction?

Generally yes, unless you can provide proof that the full amount came from you via a separate bank account in your name only.
