Worried you’re missing part of your refund? Remember, the low and middle income tax offset isn’t a refund on its own – it’s used to offset (or reduce) the amount of tax you pay. The offset amount you may be entitled to is automatically applied and could range between $255-$1080, depending on things like your taxable income and how much tax you’ve paid.

People have said I don’t need to keep records for claiming laundry expenses, as long as the amount is below $150 – is this right?

Hi Barnesy,

Thanks for your question. While it’s true that record-keeping requirements are relaxed for clothing and laundry claims up to $150, you do need to be able to explain how you calculated your claim if we ask you to. We explain the guidelines around laundry and clothing expenses on our website.

The same kind of rules apply for claiming up to 5000km in car expenses, and $300 for work-related expenses in total. However, these are not ‘standard’ deductions. To claim any deduction, you must have spent the money yourself and not been reimbursed. Check out our guide to income and deductions for more tips on managing your tax return this year.
