Why is my tax so high (approx. 20%) fortnightly?

I have a single job and I just did 17hrs in a fortnight and although my pay was less than $500. I got taxed almost a $100.

You may have not claimed the tax free threshold.

 

If this is the case then when you lodge your tax return you should get back any excess paid.

 

However, You should request to start claiming the tax free thresh hold ASAP.

 

All you need to do is to complete a "Withholding Decleration" form with correct details and give it to your employer.  Go to Question 5 - Do you want to claim  the tax free threshhold and select " YES "...
