Hi,

1. As a non-citezen is it possible to track down an old TFN

2. If you cant track down an old TFN can a non-citezen get a new one instated.

Backstorey -

A non-Australian citezen on a newly permanent VIisa has lost all details relating to thier TFN they had recieved whilst on a Tempory Visa.

They had been out of the country for over 10years since finishing the Temp Visa and had no idea that they would be returning.

How do we find the old TFN if we cannot get a new one instated?

Hi @Dev,

Thanks for getting in touch! Once someone has applied for a tax file number, it's theirs for life. There are very limited circumstances where we would delete a TFN - generally only where we have evidence that a TFN has been stolen and misused.

The longer it's been since this person has used their TFN, the harder it's going to be to confirm their identity, though - we need to be confident that the person requesting the TFN is the actual account owner.

Given it's been ten years, the easiest way to get their TFN is going to be for the person to lodge a new application. We can use their official documentation to confirm their identity and send the original TFN to them. If this person meets the criteria, they can lodge a new application using our auto-registration system and we'll send their TFN to their postal address.

Hope that helps!
