Can anybody advise me on whether or not I am exempt from Medicare levy on my
Tax return
I am a foreign resident for tax purposes on a 457 visa from England
Nobody from ATO seems to be able to answer my question
I received a debt letter from ATO in 2019 for a tax return from 2016/2017 for not paying Medicare levy
Yet the following year my return was processed as being exempt with no debt or charges for Medicare levy
So confused I just need a straight answer

Your tax return will initially be processed based on the information you declare. Did you indicate in your tax return you were not an Australian resident for tax purposes? Generally, if you are a foreign resident not entitled to Medicare benefits you will not be asked to pay the Medicare levy.
