Do I need an ABN ??

Hi everyone,

I have a regular PAYG job. Have been asked by a friend to clean their business office once a week. I would use cleaning equipment/products located at the office. They will pay me by putting money in my bank account. Am I an employee? Do I need an ABN & invoice them ? Is this PSI income ? I've tried the PSI test but it didn't say for sure. I've love the extra income just not sure how to declare income/ manage tax. It would only be 150/week. I earn under 40k from my PAYG job.

I can't find an example from ATO site that is clear about this situation.

Any clarification gratefully received !

Thanks

Tax Implications Regarding Youtube Revenue

Hi, I have a question surrounding youtube revenue I receive (approximately $150 AUD per month). At the moment I treat it as more of a hobby along side my full time job but I plan to take it more seriously in a couple of years time.

Apart from the investment of time, there’s also an associated financial cost for equipment, software and gear required to make content. I wanted to know;

1) At what stage is this hobby defined as a job?

2) Does this revenue (approx $1800-$2000) need to be declared during tax time? and

3) Am I able to make any tax deductions for the equipment I purchase from the taxable income from my full time job?

I tried searching the forums for an answer to my question but could not find one.

Thanks!

I have a friend who we used to study together and she borrowed HECS in the late 1990's, then went back to Hong Kong for good in early 2000, was planning to come back around that time to work here but ended up delay coming back around next month due to the cronovirus. Plan to move back here for good again and settle down and realised she hasn't paid the HECS yet so she is kinda worried

In terms of HECS, does she needs to pay back given its more than 20 years? If so, how is it done? Based on the income threshold? Or does she needs to notify the ATO as soon as she submit the tax return? etc

**bleep** work: Paying taxes as a financial dominatrix

I joined the world of financial domination (findom) sometime September 2019. This is not my full-time job or anything but rather something I do on the side as a hobby you could say because I like creating content. For those of you that are not familiar with findom, I receive monetary gifts or "tributes" from submissive men all over the world in exchange for nothing. I understand that this sounds too good to be true for those of you who are not familiar with the fetish/kink world, but it's true.

I haven't kept track of how much I've made since I started because I don't rely on this as my income source whatsoever, but if I were to give you a number, I would say I've made around 5k. I use Twitter as my main platform but I have branched out to clip sites such as OnlyFans and IWantClips recently to make more content.

I understand that content creators in USA have to fill out a w9 form if they've made more than 600 USD on OnlyFans in a tax year, but the Australian tax law is unclear on this subject matter so I am unsure as to what I should declare and how I should go about it. Would I have to file for an ABN to declare everything I make from Twitter and clip sites or is there a certain threshold? Any useful insight into the legality behind financial domination/fetish work would be hugely appreciated!

I should also mention that I am not Australian and I am on a Student Visa (Subclass 500) which allows me to "work up to 40 hours every 2-week period once [my] course starts." How does online "work" as this fit into this definition?

Looking forward to hearing your responses!

Hi everyone,
I would like to start a small business hiring items for people to use for weddings/engagements/events. Most of the items I plan on hiring would only be $10-$50. I work full time so my intention isn’t to earn a wage from this endeavour, but operate this business more as a hobby on weekends (as I love party planning so I think helping others make arrangements for their events would be really fun). I have noticed multiple people on Facebook and other websites “hiring” items however I am highly doubtful that they trading as a business etc.
I guess what I’m wondering is whether I can get myself into trouble for undertaking my “hobby” and earning any money in addition to my real job and not Registering as a business/ paying tax etc. I’m just not sure how I can be expected to pay tax when I’m doubtful any money I receive would reflect the hours I am putting into this. Also whether anyone has any advice on public liability etc

Out of that $US62.4K, I will need to pay accomodation/food/laundry plus travel to and from the worksite. I know I can claim laundry but is that it?

I am planning to help students to academically perform well. I will do this roughly 2~4 hours during the weekend. This is not my primary job ( I am working full time ). However, I will be charging students $30 ~ $60 depending on what I teach. This means that for each week I will be earning $120 ~ 240 a week extra. I think this is a hobby and should not be reported to the ATO. However, I want to check with professionals before helping students. What should I do?

Working two jobs and claiming tax free threshold from lower paying job?

Hello,

I have two jobs. To keep the figures simple, lets say the jobs pay (rough figures):
Job A: $50,000/Year
Job B: $58,000/Year

I started Job A in June, and when I filled out the tax file declaration, I said that I was claiming the tax free threshold (TFT) for Job A. I didn't start job B until October, so when I filled out the declaration, I said I did NOT want to claim the TFT for Job B even though it was a higher paying job.

The ATO recommends that I claim the TFT from the highest paying job. But since both jobs are paying over the threshold, is there any real need for me to change my TFT from job B to job A?

I've paid tax over the TFT for Job A, and tax starting from $0 from job B. So from my knoweldge, at the end of the FY, both payment will be lumped together, so it doesn't really matter who I'm claiming the TFT correct?

Thanks!

I’m currently working two jobs and for some reason my second job is being taxed at 50% when it is my highest earner. Just wandering if the extra amount I’m being taxed, I will receive back at end of the tax year?

Also just to clarify I worked another job until December last year where the payments I received was higher than $18,200 so I did not tick the tax free threshold on both jobs I’m currently working.

I work two jobs and working the second job moves me from the $37,001 - $90,000 to the $90,001-$180,000 bracket. However I am not taxed at this rate for my second job causing me to have to pay money back. I also do not claim the tax free threshold. Is there a way to have my second employee tax me at a higher rate to prevent this from happening?

Hi all!

My friend has two jobs. The first job earnings are approx $2300/fortnight give/take penalties.
The second job is casual.
She is likely to fall into the $37,000-$90,000 taxable income bracket but depending on her shifts may earn >$90,000.

I understand she should complete an upward variation- withholding declaration form for her second casual job and perhaps nominate 37% to be on the safe side in case she falls in the higher bracket. My question is , should she also elect to have this on her first (primary) job to avoid a bill at tax time?

Thankyou for your help!!!

In the past I put my casual jobs as a second job, however I have now changed it and put the casual as first job as I have more hours with this job and more pay, claiming tax for it (as stated on Q 9 on the Tax Declaration form), the second job I have now ticked not to claim tax for it. Did I do this correctly ?

Wondering if it's worth me doing the Friday as a 2nd job or will I be taxed most of it?

Hey. I asked a question yesterday and got an speedy and helpful answer, cheers. But I got another question. I am currently employed but am looking to go do some seasonal work down at the ski fields for 3-4 months, i was hopping that i could take long service leave from job 1 and go do job 2 then return after it finishes up, but it’s recently been bought to my attention that this is illegal (for some reason). So i’m wondering what might be my options. I was hopping not to have to quit job 1. Is unpaid leave the same? Can i cash out some of my long service leave? Any info would be appreciated. Cheers

Tax withheld on multiple jobs

I started looking at my tax withheld from my two incomes for next year vs if it were from one income. I was surprised to see that I was not as far ahead as I thought i should be tax wise.

I decided to do a hypothetical similar to my circumstances.

income 1: $3000/fn (2018-2019) tax $712 inc tft

income 2: $700/fn (2018-2019) tax $158 no tft

Total tax $870

Total income $3700/fn (2018-2019) tax $970

Have I missed something? Isn't the advice that if you have two incomes you should only claim the tft on one and you should be ok? My basic sums tell me in this scenario the 2 incomes would be $100/fn in arrears. $2600 is not an insignificant amount to be short at the end of the financial year.

How much tax do I pay when I work 2 jobs; one as a casual and one as sole trader?

I work as a casual employee at a fast food restaurant. PAYG tax is set up and is taken out when I earn over a certain amount. I know also have my own ABN as I work as a sole trader as a carer but there is no PAYG tax set up. I am trying to figure out how much tax I need to pay for the money that I earn as a sole trader so that I can start to put that money aside for when it comes time to do my tax return.

As it wont be enough hours this employer can offer me, i will continue working for the other job as well.

I'm sure i wont earn more than 37.000 $, would that mean, that id still pay the 32 % for the ABN job and stay on the 15 % tax with my TFN job?

Thank you for your help.

Best regards

Lissy

Hello

I have recently gone from having one job, to two jobs (second job taxed at the higher level) and then I left my first job and I am now only employed at the second job but still being taxed at the higher level. Both jobs were the same - casual nursing, hence why I could do them at the same time. I am wondering how I change my tax withheld amount back to just one employer?

Thanks

I currently work two jobs. And I only claimed the tax free threshold at my first job as I make more there. But my employers at my second job are claiming it for me there too, even after I have told them that’s not what I selected on my tax declaration. How can I fix this, as I do not want a tax bill?

I started a second back in April (casual 3 afternoons a week. Im sure I ticked the no box to claiming the tax three threshold as my first full time job claims it. Ive only just realised that I am not paying any tax on second job. My payslip says $18 year to date but the last few payslips I haven't had any tax taken off. Is this a normal thing to happen or have I done something wrong. I will talk to my second job management and double check what I ticked on my tax form but thought I'd check here to see if anyone can help. Will this effect my tax claim this year. Does it look like I will need to owe tax as I haven't had much taken out. Im very confused and starting to stress....helpppp.

Hi,

Two part question.

Basic info- Employed in the NT, have 13 weeks LSL banked up and have been offered a role with a similar company to that which I currently work.

Firstly, What rate would I be taxed on my Long Service leave when I leave my current employer? I have been told I will lose up to .60c in the dollar but that cant be right.

Secondly, I have also been advised that I could request to take my LSL at half pay over six months while I start a new role with a similar company- My research suggests that this is far from correct. Thoughts?

M

Mobile Phone Selling

Hi guys,

Question for you. I've just recently start to buy and sell mobile phones and tablets on ebay and repair them as a hobby. I'm making a loss at the moment (only by a couple of hundred dollars), but enjoy it as I enjoy taking things apart and learning, and I'm under the impression that I don't have to register for an ABN at the moment as I'm treating it as a hobby not a business. However I am keeping records of what I'm buying and selling (such as parts etc) so I can keep track of where I am. I also think I can ramp it up a bit more and if I put my mind to it I could make some good money.

At what point should I get an ABN? When do I say, yeah actually, I think I need an ABN? And if I don't ramp it up and just keep it as it is, do I have to declare the loss as part of my tax return? Obviously if I made a profit it would go under my personal tax return, but what if I make a loss and spend more money on it than I make?

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Matt

We run an NFP Arts production company and are unsure if we require some of our performers to apply for an ABN or if it is considered a Hobby.

Some performers either perform as their job, or are studying to do this as their job so have an ABN. Others performed for the love of it, but we strongly believe in paying people for their work, so we want to make sure we pay everyone involved even though they were doing it just for fun. Those who have an ABN will invoice us, Do we require those who don't have an ABN and are doing this as a once-off performance to get an ABN, or does it classify as a hobby?

Hi everyone,

Sorry, I am an intarnational student and my english is not good. I hope it is clear enough.

My story:

I work part time for a small shop and I have no other jobs but when I login to ATO, under income statements section, there are 2 jobs showings! One from my employer and the other appears to be my employer's accountant. I raised this with my employer and he said that I should ignore this as his accountant makes payments on behalf of him.

Questions:

1. Am I in danger? As an international student, I am not meant to work more than 20 hours, however, in ATO, it looks like I am working 40 hours a week!

2. If this is a mistake, can this be fixed? Who needs to fix this and how?

3. If this is not a mistake, what are they trying to achieve? And what am I supposed to do? I am just an international student!

Thank you all for reading

Z

Withholding declaration upwards

Hi, I have two jobs and I have questions regarding paying tax.

From my main job, I earned about $2500-$3000 (casual employee) for fortnightly.

I have the second job which I was employed earlier than my current main job and earned about $620 for fortnightly. When I got hired from this job, I ticked tax-free threshold ( and from my current main job too). So I applied tax-free threshold for two jobs at the moment. I want to fix this as I don't want to pay tax debt in the next financial year.

From this point, do I understand right to apply for withholding declaration? but what is upwards variation? If I apply for withholding declaration upwards variation, that means my second job doesn't affect at all during my tax return period? Which one should I apply? Withholding declaration or Withholding declaration upwards variation form??

Please help me out to understand.

Thank you.

I’m having difficulty figuring out if I’m currently eligible for an ABN. I am a photographer and previously freelanced as a sole trader but for the last few years have only worked as an employee. As a result my ABN was cancelled after this years tax return. I am doing a one off freelance job this month for a friends company and need to invoice them (less than $1000.) I don’t plan on doing any more jobs this financial year or any time in the near future so I am unsure if I am eligible to re-apply for an ABN? I am wondering if it would be acceptable to not quote an ABN but I feel as though the job will be seen as business activity as it’s what I do for work. Any help would be great.

When I do my tax I only have to do an individual tax return for both incomes combined.

I don't teach to earn money, but because I want to share my knowledge.

I buy instruments and recording equipment with the money I earn and use it to teach the kids.

If I spend more than $1k on the music equipment can I only deduct up to $1k from my taxable income? Or can I deduct more, theoretically up to $81k.

Call it ROLE A.

While working ROLE A, I took-up a short term sports coaching role which was to be remunerated (I have yet to be paid for it). Call it ROLE B.

ROLE B was coaching a sports team in a sport which is a real passion.

Characteristics of ROLE B:

It is a short term 12 weeks.

I had never coached this team before.

There is no ongoing committment.

I was still employed and working 9.00am - 5.00pm at ROLE A while undertaking ROLE B

ROLE B was completed during hours in the evening and weekends.

Total remuneration of ROLE B is less then 18% against my normal annual salary from ROLE A.

Can I class this as a hobby?

Am involved with a small sports club that has a bar manager paid as a normal employee, ie tax, super, workcover. When they can't work a shift we use a suitably qualified club member(s) and pay them cash. Rarely more that $200 a month mostly under a $100. Pay rate is $21 ph at moment. We include them in the work cover levy, but don't take tax out or issue a payment advice as we don't colect their TFN. What do we have to do to comply with new cash in hand rules?

Tax on my second job

Hi there,

So i worked a supermarket casual job. i have recently gotten a second job on a contract in an office. The office job is my main money maker earning approximately 50k a year and my supermarket job makes about 28k a year. i also have a HECS debt of around 28k. USUALLY we are told to not claim the tax free threshold on the lower earning job - we get taxed higher on the second smaller paying job. I have done mine the other way around. I am not claiming the tax free threshold at my office job. By doing so, it looks like my yearly tax i pay should be 14k (12k tax and 2k HECS). Then my supermarket job earning 28k should technically only pay 1.6k in taxes for the year. This brings my totaly to approximately 15.6k tax i will be paying for a financial year. However, when you compare this value with someone who has 1 job earning 78k (equal to my 2 jobs combined) they are paying 21.2k tax per year. So even though i am paying the highest rate of tax on my biggest earning job- which i thought might put me ahead in terms of taxes- does this mean I on track to have roughly a 6k TAX DEBT at the end of the financial year?!?!?!

It almost does not seem worth the 55 hour work week to end up with such a huge debt. Should i not claim the tax free threshold on both jobs? That way i pay 14k tax at my office job and then i would pay 6k tax at my supermarket job which is just shy of the total 21k i should be paying for a 78k earning job. I would appreciate someone's help with this because i am stressing out at the thought of doing everything right and yet still ending up with a tax debt.

Occasionally my beehives, which I keep purely for a hobby, produce more honey than we can eat. Friends offer to buy the excess off me but I have been reluctant to ask for money as I am not sure what my tax obligations would be (aside from food handling legalities). I don't intend to make money from my hives, but some money in return would be nice to help pay towards their running costs when I do have enough excess honey to offer to people. Is this still a hobby from a tax point of view?

I work as a freelance editor. I have an ABN and the description of my main business or professional activity indicated on my tax return is 'Writer & Editor'. I currently pay quarterly tax payments, and my accountant prepares my tax return once yearly.

I'm also an astrologer and I'm undergoing meditation teacher training and I hope to see clients offering both modalities in a consultation and in workshops, meditation teaching etc, in which I will be paid for my services. Do I need to obtain a second ABN for this work, and does this mean I will need to complete two tax returns, one for my editing work and another for my astrology and meditation work?

My accountant advised me that I should consider my meditation and astrology work as a hobby, so I don't need to pay tax; however, I do plan to receive an income. For the amount I expect to earn at this stage I would prefer not to have to pay my accountant twice to prepare two small tax returns.

Hi, I have just gotten a second job, but I am not sure how to go about with tax. Do I claim the tax free threshold on my highest paying or lowest paying job? I have think I will collectively earn over $18,000 but I just was not sure which one to choose. The second job is 17 hours a week and is part time, and the job I already have is casual, and I could potenially earn more however it would depend week to week (i.e. how many shifts I get per week, which may be around 17 hours as well).

Also in this process you asked if there were any other papers of things needed to be done and were advised by them no they will handle everything and yes these questions were in email form so there is a paper trail to back up allegation.

Earnings from this role are likely in the realm of less than $16,000 / FY. I have calculated the tax I will need to pay per session (taking into account the income from my other work, levies etc), and I want to pay it manually each time I get paid via the BPAY option (that is, rather than setting up a regular PAYG installment).

So, my problem is, when I look at my ATO/mygov account there are two accounts it says I can pay tax into - "Income Tax" (followed by some numbers), and "activity statement" following also by some numbers:

Which account do I Bpay my tax payments into?

And on a side note ... Do I need to do anything with regard to the 'activity statement' given the nature of my side-hustle?

Oh and if there is anything else glaring I have missed and should be thinking about - please let me know!

Many thanks,

~ Artemis

Second job/HECS/salary packaging

Hi there,

I’ve recently started a second job and trying to get my head around tax.

I’ve selected no tax free threshold for the second job and understand that this will get taxed at a higher rate. However when the income from my first and second job are combined it seems I won’t be paying enough tax and will owe the ATO. For example if I earn $56,000 at my first job that will be taxed $9,627 and earn $20,000 at my second job taxed without threshold $3,800. Together that would be $13,427 tax. However, incomes combined would be $76,000 per year ($16,687 tax) which is $3,260 more tax. Does that mean I would end up owing the ATO come tax time?

The same applies with my HECS debt. I’ll be paying it weekly with the first job but it’s not coming out of the second as it’s below the threshold but when both incomes are combined I’ll owe more HECS repayments.

Is there any way around this situation so I don’t end up having a huge amount to pay come tax time?

Additionally, I get $9000 of my pay from my first job tax free with salary packaging. Does this effect my HECS repayments?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks Meg

Tax free threshold- two employers at different times during the financial year

If I have jobs with two different employers during the financial year, and only worked for one employer at one time during the course of the year (so there was no overlap in the positions held/time worked), what does that mean for ticking the tax free threshold?

If I work with employer 1 from August to December, employer 2 January to February, and employer 1 again from March to June, I am never working for more than one employer at one time.

When I am filling out my TFN forms, do I always tick yes for question 8 re the tax free threshold, because I'm only ever holding one job at a time?
