Scams are designed to trick you into paying money or giving out your personal information. ATO-related scams are unfortunately very common.

One scam we often see is where you receive a call with an automated recording stating that there is a lawsuit against you or that you owe us a large sum of money.

People with poor literacy or who speak English as a second language are most vulnerable to these scams. To try and help we have provided scams advice in an easy to read format.

You can print the advice and share it with people who don’t have access to the internet. You can also email a PDF version to people you think might be targeted. The PDF is available at the bottom of the page.

We have more detailed scams information at ato.gov.au/scams

The tactics that scammers use will always keep changing. They will try new methods to contact people and request payment.

We regularly provide alerts showing the latest examples of scams we are aware of. You can receive our scam alerts by subscribing to the General updates.
