The business has an abn and I suspect this was a cash-in-hand job. There were about another 40 jobs that were to be undertaken from the business within a few days, so this business seemed to be raking in the cash without declaring it to ATO

Failing to supply a tax invoice may not be tax evasion you can request one in writing; the supplier must provide one within 28 days.
If the supplier fails to issue you with tax invoice within 28 days of being requested to do so or if they make a false statement on the tax invoice, they may be liable for penalties.
If a supplier is unwilling to provide you with a valid tax invoice, you can request permission from us to claim the GST credit by writing to GST General Technical Advice.

You will need to provide the following information:
- Your name, contact details and ABN
- Documents relating to the purchase
- The name, address and ABN (if known) of the supplier
- The nature, purpose and quantity of the purchase
- The amount paid or payable and the amount of GST included, and
- The steps you have taken to obtain a tax invoice.
Our Tax Integrity Centre (TIC) allows the community to do their part in the fight against the black economy by reporting information on suspected or known black economy activity. To report any known or suspected illegal behaviour you can report them to us anonymously by completing our tip-off form online.
