Hi there,

We are a start-up and have been doing a lot of advertising on facebook and instagram.

Is it fair to assume that since these are Americam companies, there is no gst content to account for in our payments to them?

Hi parkatmine,

Welcome to our Community!

GST is a tax on goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia. From 1 July 2017 even if companies are based in America they may need to charge GST. However, as foreign-based suppliers of on-line advertising they are only required to charge GST to Australian Consumers. A GST-registered business acquiring on-line advertising in carrying on their business is not an Australian consumer.

If your business is acquiring online advertising from an overseas entity directly then you can find more information on when GST will not be charged and what to do if you were incorrectly charged GST on our website.

NOTE: If you are dealing with the Australian branch or subsidiary of a multinational business, then the above link is not relevant as the supply is not from offshore and the Australian supplier should charge GST and issue a tax invoice.

You can find more information about who charges GST or can seek a definite response relating to your personal situation by emailing our GST area directly at AustraliaGST@ato.gov.au.

Thanks, JodieH.
