Hi There

We rented a property last year (2 bed 2 bath) and on agreement with the landlord, we rented out the spare room through AirBNB rather than getting a full time tenant.

Now we are trying to do our tax return but we don't know how to properly declare our AirBNB income, as all of the rental income/share economy sections only apply if you are the Owner of the house.

Is there any way to declare this income, so that we can pay the appropriate tax?

Do we fill out the forms as if we are the owner of the property for tax purposes?

Thanks!

Hi @Peterppp,

Welcome to our Community!

Generally speaking however, if you're the one receiving the rental income from Airbnb then you need to declare this income in your tax return.

We've answered a query similar query on our Community before, so check out Subleasing and Airbnb for more information.

If you're lodging your return online via myTax, you can select the Live Chat option to the right of the screen and you'll be connected to an ATO officer who can assist you with lodging your return. Alternatively, you can contact us between 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday to discuss your situation with an operator.

Thanks, JodieH.
