Can you claim the cost to obtain a heavy vehicle drivers licence (as opposed to a normal car drivers licence).

Hi @Tonyges,

Generally you can claim work-related tax deductions for expenses relating to earning income for your current employment role. So if you already have a regular driver's licence, and as part of your current job you need to upgrade to a special licence or condition, then you should be able to claim a deduction.

Expenses incurred prior to gaining employment, or expenses relating to changing your type of employment are not tax deductible. Additionally, the cost involved to initially obtain or renew a regular driver's licence isn't claimable as it's considered a private expense.

I'd recommend to have a read of our claiming deductions page and also the occupation and industry specific guides to see if your work type is listed. Some employment roles are entitled to claim different expenses, so it's good to know for future reference Smiley Happy
