Morning ATO world,

Can anyone explain why stage 1 and 6 are the same "In Progress- Processing" it makes no sense if the ATO want to give you the ability to track your tax return but make 2 steps the same.

My return is at the 3.5 week mark and saying "in progress - Processing" and curious if that 2ould be stage 1 or 6 and if there is a way I can find out?

Thanks in advance

Hi @JayCob

Thanks for your question.

It could be either. As per the tracking your refund or fixing a mistake page on our website:

  • 1. In progress – Processing: We have received the return and processing has started.
  • 6. In progress – Processing: We are generating the notice of assessment and any associated refund where an estimated issue date is shown.

Not all returns will undergo all the steps outlined. For some it will go straight from stage 1 to 6 and then 7. In turn, it will appear as though there are two stages: In progress - Processing and Issued. In other words, In progress - Processing is effectively one stage.

If you have been tracking your return's progress and it has previously been at stages 2, 3, 4 and/or 5, it is reasonable to assume that you are now at stage 6.

If it has only ever been at the In progress - Processing stage, it is hard to say. Electronic returns are normally processed in two weeks. Sometimes, returns take longer to process and can be delayed for a number of reasons.

If your return is delayed you do not need to phone us. We will contact you if we need more information.

Also, we have a Knowledge Base article that you can have a look at if you like:

Tax Time: Where’s my tax return?

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
