Worried you’re missing part of your refund? Remember, the low and middle income tax offset isn’t a refund on its own – it’s used to offset (or reduce) the amount of tax you pay. The offset amount you may be entitled to is automatically applied and could range between $255-$1080, depending on things like your taxable income and how much tax you’ve paid.

Hobby or business?

I've come into contact with a photographer whos not registered with an  ABN. They have given me a price package for photographing my wedding but has told me they've not got an ABN. Is it illegal to charge? They have noted extra costs in their price when I have asked about travel costing and have said they will provide a usb with our photos. Does this sound like a hobby or business?

I know this person personally through family and know that this photography stuff is a second job ad they work retail also. I don't know if that makes a difference.

@Cmarieee

It is definately not a hobby and any income minus deductions needs to be declared.

Whilst it is not illegal to operate a business without an ABN it is highly suggested.

Thank you!

I've had someone confirm with the person and she has openly told them she has no ABN but is charging people for her photography.
