My teenage daughter made an application for a Tax File Number through a website below

https://www.taxfilenumber-au.com

She was sure it was official as it was on the first page of google and looked legitimate. She was sure the application is a free process and at no point was she made known otherwise. Since then they have taken $177.00 out of her account without authorisation.

she is worried this is a complete scam website that now knows all of her details.

Google is in the Advertising market therefore all business results are always on the top, not official ones.

They are probably just making money from people who click on the first link.

You can report them the the Tax practioners board (https://www.tpb.gov.au/), but they are probably registered tax agents and just over charging for a free service which they can.do.

You are not alone, a lot of people complain about them in this forum.

Hi @Alla1,

We’re sorry to hear about your daughter's experience applying for a tax file number.

@macfanboy has provided some really useful information already.

We have seen some of our community members be successful in getting a refund and cancelling their application with similar organisations after they learned that it wasn’t the ATO. As @macfanboy suggested, you could lodge a complaint with the Tax Practitioners Board, particularly if you have any concerns regarding your daughter’s personal details. If your daughter doesn’t receive her tax file number within the service standard of 30 days, please let us know.

I would be contacting the bank and asking for a block to be put on the account. The last thing you want is the organisation to help themselves to even more of her money.
