Hi everyone.

Do Australian citizens, born and raised, who travel to study at a university overseas, generally remain Australian residents for tax purposes for the duration of their degree? Is there a time limit? For example, would an Australian attending medical school for 6 years in a foreign country, continue to be classified as an Australian tax resident until they graduate?

Thank you for your advice.

Hi @Happy_Wanderer,

Residency status is based on self assessment. If you go through the test available under Residency tests for tax purposes, you will be able to determine your residency status.
