Hello, this is abit random, but I'm writing a book and need to understand what could result in a prison sentence if someone was found guilty of tax evasion/fraud? To make it more complicated, this is for a story based in the late 1990's/2000's....!

If anyone can help or point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated!!

Thankyou :-)

For individuals, in most cases they'd simply be forced to pay the outstanding amount they owe to the ATO, including interest and overdue charges, etc..

To warrant a prison sentence somebody would have to commit fraud of epic proportions. Majority of cases I've seen of tax fraud resulting in prison sentences, were for people who defrauded amounts in the hundreds of thousands or more.Judges generally try to avoid sending people to prison for petty/white collar crimes and first offences because of the negative influence of other inmates incarcerated for more serious crimes.
