I have an old tax refund cheque of my flatmate who is not in the country anymore and doesn't have an Australian Bank account.

I tried depositing the cheque in to my bank account, however after it cleared, my bank statement says "Returned Cheque".

Can anyone help me with this? Is this because the cheque is not in my name?

Will I have to get my flatmate to deposit it in their overseas account somehow?

Thank you!

Hi @soletrader77,

You wouldn't be able to deposit a cheque in someone else's name into your own bank account. The bank can confirm the reason they returned the cheque to you, but more then likely it was returned because it's not in your name.

You'll have to forward the cheque to your friend overseas and they'll need to have a bank overseas convert the cheque into that currency for them.

Hi Ren,

Thank you for the reply.

Okay, that makes sense. But now the problem I have is, the cheque is deposited and I don't have a copy on me anymore. How would I send it to my friend or any way for them to claim the money without the physical copy of the cheque present?

Hi @soletrader77,

Refund cheques issued by us are only valid for 15mnths from date of issue. If the cheque was older then this, it would've become stale and the credit will remain with us on your friend's account. He can request the refund be reissued, by providing us with his current details. If he doesn't have an Australian bank account it will be sent as a cheque to his overseas address.
