Hi,

I need to amend my 18/19 tax return but when I hit the 'lodge' button I keep getting an error message saying that there is a technical error. I have spoken to the ATO and there is no reason why I shouldn't be able to amend the return and I have successfully amended my 19/20 return without any problems. The advice I got was to keep trying - it has now been over a month and there is no change.

If I need to submit a paper return do I need to fill in all the sections again? I just want to amend the rental property section but have employment and sole trader income as well. The supplement for Sole Trader/business income says that I have to complete this section via myTax (which I can't due to the error) or via a registered tax agent? I don't even want to amend this section so it seems ridiculous that I would have to go to a tax agent to just submit what is already on the return.

Please can you advise on what I should do?

Hi @GC13

Check and see if the time limit for an amendment has expired. If it has, then an objection for an extension of time needs be requested. If it meets the criteria then you will be able to amend.

Hi @MarkATO,

Thanks for your message. The time limit hasn't expired, I have checked with the ATO. There isn't any reason that I shouldn't be able to amend the return.

Hi @Dan_ATO ,

Thank you for checking. I haven't had any luck. I have cleared cache/cookies and tried every web-browser, I really don't know what to do next. Whatever I try I keep getting the 'We're experiencing technical issues...' error.

Hi @GC13

Weird! Have you tried on a different internet connection? Maybe something's wigging out there. Have you lodged on that device previously? Maybe try a different device.

Does it happen when you try to amend your other returns? This might help us work out where there's an issue. If that return was last amended by us, then almost always you won't be able to amend the return and would have to lodge an objection instead.

Some (hopefully) good news though: even if you need to lodge it by paper, you only need to tell us the question labels you want to change. Take a look at the request for amendment of income tax return for individuals on our website. :)
