Hello

I'm an Australian citizen who lived in New Zealand for two years (October 2017 to October 2019) and thus paid tax there. In October 2019, I came to Australia for a long visit but due to Covid complications I am still here. I continued working part time for a New Zealand company remotely and thus lodged an income tax return there for the (March 31st) 2020 tax year as I had not been outside of New Zealand for 183 days and so was still considered a New Zealand resident for tax purposes.

However, for the (March 31st) 2021 tax year, I now realize that I was a non-resident of New Zealand and so should have lodged a tax return in Australia. Instead, I lodged it in New Zealand - I guess I was thinking that as I worked for a New Zealand company and would be returning there "any day soon". Do I need to rectify this and lodge a return in Australia for the 2020/2021 tax year even though I have already done so in New Zealand?

Would appreciate advice.

Hi @dgcmcm

If you're a tax resident of Australia then you'll need to lodge an Australian tax return and declare your worldwide income.

Our financial year is from 1 July to 30 June, so if you became a resident part way through then you'll declare your income from the day you became a resident for tax purposes up to the end of the financial year.

Generally where you perform the work is the source of your income but you should look to the tax treaty to determine which country has taxing rights. In your Australian return you can claim an offset for foreign tax paid.
