I am a individuals in need to apply for Tax file number.

There are two options for me, one is mailing the "Tax file number – application or enquiry for individuals living outside Australia" to ATO which only need TWO certified copies of POI documents and ACCEPT foreign government identification and foreign birth certificate. However, with mailing time and 28 days of processing time things will run late for me.

On the other hand I can apply TFN via Australia Post after I arrived Australia and completed my quarantine. However, the I need THREE POI documents and DO NOT accept any foreign documents, I have two primary POI at hands but am one POI short. My question is that, can I use foriegn ID or birth certificate as one of my POI when applying TFN via Australian Post?

Hi @SamuelWong,

If you're over 16, you'll need to supply three documents, one of which must be a primary document. For you, this will be a foreign passport.

All other documents must be Australian-issued, like you've said, so a foreign government ID or birth certificate will not be accepted.

You can read the acceptable proof of identity documents for an Australia post application on our website.

Alternatively, you may be able to apply as a foreign passport holder once you're in Australia.
