Hi, i just started a new job, and am paying the highest tax, i must of ticked the wrong box on the form by mistake? My employer said to check with the ATO. How do i check this and fix it please?

You can easily update your selection by completing a Withholding Declaration form for your employer.
The easiest way to do this online if you have a myGov account with the ATO services linked.
The form can be found under the 'Employment' menu.
Through here, you can select to claim the tax-free threshold, unless you're considered a foreign resident for tax purposes or if you're on a working holiday maker (WHM) visa as there is no tax-free entitlement under these circumstances.
You can check out or website for more information on individual income tax rates for the different tax residency statuses.
Once you submit the form, the changes will take place as of your next pay.
So even though it can't be back-dated to your previous payments, when you lodge your tax return for the year we will calculate if too much tax has been withheld, and if so the extra amount will become a tax credit.
