Hi,

I am looking to register for an ABN to do some lawn mowing and maintenance. Not lloking to go large scale but just enough to keep my head above water in the current climate.

I will not be registering for GST so I know I do not need to issue a "tax" invoice.

As the majority of my lawn mowing will be small scale (each job probably ranging from $30-$60) I need to know do I need to provide a regular invoice for all of these smaller jobs or is there a threshold set at a certain level whereby a regular invoice must be provided. I know if the client requests one that I must provide it but just asking I guess is there a minimum level whereby one has to be prepared?

When it comes time to do up me EOFY tax return is a simple ledger showing these smaller accounts acceptable rather than individual receipts if I am not required to provide an invoice under a certain figure?

Hope this is easy enough to follow and thanks in advance.

Hi @Braddo71,

You are correct in stating that as you have elected not to register for GST at this early stage of your business you don't need to provide customers with GST tax invoices.

It is good business practice to provide a customer with an invoice which quotes your ABN though. There is no minimum invoice amount or mandatory requirement to do this, however if you are dealing with a charity or a NFP customer they will require an invoice. If the invoice does not include an ABN they must withhold 47% (from 1 July 2017) from the payment they make to you and send the withheld amount to us. So that's one to be well aware of.

In terms of your record-keeping for small business purposes I'd recommend you having a look at our online resources.

All the best!
