I have charged a General interest charge (GIC)of over $1000 because I didn't lodge last 6 years.

Now, I paid all amounts of GIC and I lodged all tax return for up-to date.

But I found my return already taken as "credit offset to integrated client account" about $1500

and "reraise of non-pursuit amount" DR$1750 3 years ago.

(At this year my taxable income was $30,500)

so I feel like paid over $4000 for the penalty. Is that normal amount of money for penarty?

Do you think Is there any chance to ask to refund offsets?

Thank you

Hi @may14,

There's a few different penalty amounts there so I'll split my response up to explain them a little better.

In some situations you can request remission of the GIC charges. You would need to provide evidence/reasoning on why you could not make the original payment on time (in this case it would also be why you did not lodge on time).

The offset to your integrated client account would be to cover an amount owing on there. This account generally relates to a business of yours. I can't advise whether this can be refunded without knowing what the owing amount on your integrated client account relates to.

The "reraise of non-pursuit" amount relates to an old debt that we previously chose not to pursue. When this occurs we send out letters advising. In the letter it explains that in furture this amount can be re-raised and pursued. Upon lodgement of your return, the decision would have been made to pursue the amount. Depending on what the original debt was will determine if any remission is possible.

I suggest contacting our debt department to run through the penalties applied to your account. They'll discuss your situation with you and be able to advise if any remissions are applicable. Their number can be found on our contact us page under debt and lodgement enquiries.

Hope this helps, let us know if you have any questions.
