Hi

I am seeking clarification regarding deductions for travel expenses incurred in relation to attending a work related conference. The situation is as follows:

I live in Sydney and attend a conference in Adelaide, so fly from Sydney to Adelaide and stay for 3 days - solely for the conference. On the way home, I book flights from Adelaide to Canberra as I have a personal function to attend before returning to my home in Sydney. My question is, can I claim the cost of the flights from Adelaide to Canberra in my tax return? Thanks

Hi @Petrina44,

If it is not work related travel, then you can not claim it as a deduction. As you have advised that your flight from Adelaide to Canberra was not work related, you could not claim that cost as a deduction.

You can find more information claiming travel expenses as an employee under Work-related travel expenses or as an individual in business under Claiming a tax deduction for business travel expenses.
