I have a 3 monthly Vicroads car registration receipt from Vicroads site that I'm paying through business bank account. On Vicroads receipt there is no GST charged at all. Do I code it as BAS Excluded or GST Free or add 10% GST? This is a 3 monthly payment so I don't know what to do and I have next 3 monthly Activity Statement due. I will need to know this each time I get them every 3 months. And why cant all states with their car rego charges be GST free or Bas excluded so we dont have to do any complex splits? Its a government payment. Please help

Enter the expense as GST free if there's no GST being charged on your receipt. There should be a function that you can set this uo in your Xero software so you can record it for each statement without having to enter the details each time if that helps?

Thanks Flux! Yes, it's definitely no GST listed on the VicRoads 3 monthly registration receipts. So as you suggested I will code it in XERO using the GST FREE setting. Unfortunately the transaction name changes per transaction so XERO can't figure it out. I will have to remember to describe it and tag it manually. And it's annoying that Government department doesnt email me the receipt in email so I have to go to Vicroads > transaction history and search date range - so annoyingly outdated.

Thing is they charge GST on the TAC and you lose out on credits if you do not claim it. It is required by law to provide a Tax Invoice and required by the ATO to provide one with BAS yet the very bodies governing this are just MEH we can't be bothered giving a tax invoice and make it hard so they gain more from us not being able to claim the GST component.

VicRoads registration papers now list the GST included in the Registration charges. It only applies to the "TAC Charge".

E.g. 2023 Renewal - Fee Breakdown

Registration fee $324.70

TAC Charge * $391.00

Insurance Duty $39.10

TOTAL Due $754.80

* incl. $35.55 GST.
