82% of the car expenses is claimed for business purposes. The car was written off and a comprehensive car insurance policy payout was received, and the car was salvaged.

You will need to compare the book value of the car when it was written off with the insurance payout. 82 per cent of any excess will be assessable income to you. Eg. The cars written down value is $100 at the time it was destroyed and you received $200 from the insurance. The difference is $100 which you can reduce by any private usage. Therefore $82 will be assessable income to you.

Our car was underinsured. It should have been insured for $10,000, but instead it was insured for $8,800. So that would mean we have no assessable income for it? Either business or personal? (thanks very much!)

Hi @Taxpuppy

You need to do a balancing adjustment.

If you receive $8,800, and use the vehicle for 82% business, you have $7,216 to consider in your balancing adjustment.

Let's say the depreciated value on the tax return is down to $5,216. This means the difference of $2,000 is assessable income to the business.

Or, let's say the depreciated value on the tax return is down to $8,216. This means the difference of $1,000 is deductible to the business.

You can read about balancing adjustments on our website.
