Hi @SDJE,

Sorry that you weren't able to get through to someone on the phones. We've been experiencing higher call volumes than usual recently, and we understand the impact it has on waiting times.

Our service standard for processing TFN applications is 28 days from the date we receive the application, and the delay may depend on how you applied.

If you sent a paper application, the time it takes for the form to reach us may vary depending where it's been posted from and the postage service in the area.

If you completed an online application as an Australian resident, you need to also book and attend an interview with Australia Post with your identity documents. This step needs to be completed otherwise the application won't come through to us. The application process for Australian citizens is also in public beta, meaning the system is being tested so we can make improvements to our technology services.

Online applications for temporary visitors, permanent migrants and foreign passport holders however, come through immediately.

You can view the different ways to apply for a TFN on our website. You may fit the criteria to apply via myGov where you may receive it straight away.
