I have been retired for several years but have recently completed some consulting work as a sole trader during which I collected some GST. How do I pay it to ATO?

Hi @freddles,

As a sole trader you should already have an ABN sorted out, but you'll need to make sure you're registered for GST in order to charge it. If you're registered for GST you'll report and pay it to us in an Activity statement. If you haven't registered for GST, you'll need to do so to be able to report that. You'll need to make sure you enter the registration date in as before the date you collected GST.

Depending on what you chose when you registered, you'll lodge an activity statement monthly, quarterly, or annually. If you have a myGov account linked with us, your activity statements will appear there and can be lodged online. If not, you'll receive your activity statement in the mail at some point closer to the end of the period. For example, if you selected quarterly, you would most likely receive your activity statement in the later half of the quarter. Your activity statements will have information on how to pay the amount to us when required. I recommend having a read through our page on GST. There's a bunch of links that run through the different stages of the process that would be helpful to read through.
