Hi all,

I am about to turn 22 which means I’m deemed as ‘independant’ and will finally qualify for JobSeeker. I am a small business owner and consider myself self employed. I run an online store that has periods of being open and closed, meaning periods of time where I have $0 income. My partner (who I do not live with) is currently receiving JobSeeker payments and for a while he had to be applying for a set amount of jobs per fortnight to qualify for payments. Once he qualified for Disability Support Pension (DSP), he was exemplified from these job application requirements.

I struggle daily with several mental health conditions however it was deemed by Centrelink that I do not meet the criteria to receive DSP. According to the payments and services calculator, I am highly likely to qualify for JobSeeker once I turn 22.

My question is; if I am self employed, albeit with a very very small income, will that exemplify me from job application requirements? I am not looking for a part time job right now as my current health status prevents me from working and is why I had to leave my last job over 2 months ago.

I do have an ABN however it is under an outdated business name and I am in the process of changing it/applying for a new one.

I hope this makes sense, please feel free to ask any questions if further clarification is needed, thank you in advance for any advice you have to offer!

Hi @cosmicarmadillo,

Sounds like you could do with a break, the best advice on this, as we don't handle the jobseeker payment is Services Australia. Some of our community users may be able to provide some advice too! I had a look at their page on the jobseeker payment and couldn't see much about business income. I recommend contacting services Australia directly to see if they can provide some advice on this. They would be able to give you a more accurate response than this.
