I have some personal funds from a property settlement to invest (not downsizing). On 1st July 2022 I will be 74 (turn 75 Jan 2023) and ATO web site says I can contribute $110,000 to my SMSF without a work test (I have been retired for yonks and drawing on my fund). My current SMSF balance is way below the threshold so that is not a problem. My question is can I use the "bring forward" option and contribute $330,000?? Technically [unless they change the rules again, again, again ] I will not be eligible to contribute in 2024 & 2025 as I will be 75 or over then. So can I bring forward contributions for years when I am not eligible to July 22, when I am eligible ??? P.S. don't advise me to ask my super fund - I'm it.

$ 330 K = yes - but I would add to the ATO comment below " as long as you are under age 75 + 28 days when the contribution is made." And I would not rely on the 28 days.

From ATO:

1 July 2022 and later years

If you are under 75 years of age at any time in a financial year you may be able to make non-concessional contributions of up to three times the annual non-concessional cap in that financial year.

If you are 75 years or older your fund may only be able to accept employer contributions and downsizer contributions.

Example: Eligible for the bring-forward arrangement

Bernard is 74 years old on 1 July 2022. His non-concessional contributions cap for 2022-23 is $110,000. His total super balance at 30 June 2022 is $800,000.

Bernard's age makes him eligible for the bring-forward arrangement.

During the financial year he made the following non-concessional contributions to his super fund:

  • $75,000 in October 2022
  • $75,000 in April 2023.

Bernard has triggered the bring forward arrangement

Hi Bruce

Thanks for that, sounds good. As a new boy, I believe the ATO will sanction this advice if it is kosher, and I will be advised???
