The Hiver Bank Everyday Account gives 5% cashback on eligible purchases (https://hiver.bank/products/everyday/) while HSBC Everyday Global Account gives 2% cashback on eligible tap and pay transactions (https://www.hsbc.com.au/accounts/products/everyday-global/).

With regards to the above debit card cashback:

1.) Does debit card cashback need to be included in the individual income tax return?

2.) Is debit card cashback taxable?

I have seen a previous post regarding credit card cashback, so I am guessing the above debit card cashback is not taxable and does not need to be included in the individual income tax return. I would appreciate any reply & it would be great if you have a link to a reference if available.

Hi @fiato,

You're correct. Cashback rewards are treated similarly to receiving points/bonus redemptions from credit cards where they aren't considered assessable income. However, if it's in the course of carrying on a business there are conditions where cashback's maybe taxable.
